Safe sleeping for babies

The Safer Babies campaign was launched as a recommendation from the Child Death Overview Panel. The campaign is to help parents and professionals know the safest sleeping positions for babies and promote the message, "Back to sleep, front to play".

If a child is under one year old you should:

  • never lie the baby on its side or front – always on their back with their feet to the bottom of the cot
  • keep the baby in a cot in your room for the first 6 months, but not in your bed
  • give the baby sheets and blankets but not duvets which can make them too hot
  • keep their room between 16 and 20 degrees Celsius
  • not sleep with your baby on the sofa or armchair
  • avoid exposing babies to cigarette smoke
