Drama 1
Sixth form students from The Robert Napier School perform a powerful dramatisation of the case of Baby P. Examining the relationships and services that surrounded Baby P we are given an insight into the shortfalls that resulted in his untimely tragic death. How aspects such as an overloaded social service, domineering male partners and hostile parents could have an effect on safeguarding children is thought provokingly demonstrated. The resounding theme of the piece is “I should have done something more”, demonstrating how child protection is every ones responsibility.
Drama 2
Rainham Mark Grammar School examine the indicators of neglect using the idea of a “faceless” child. The story is told retrospectively, with accounts from peers and neighbours about things they saw and did nothing about, after the victim has died from neglect. The students really drive home the message that hindsight will not protect our children and young people from the dangers of neglect, that action should be taken as soon as aspects of neglect are recognised.
Drama 3
The effect abuse has on a young person can be devastating. Rainham Mark look at the development of a “grooming” relationship and the consequences it has on a young person’s life. The students look at the changing behaviour that may indicate the development of grooming relationships. Dramatic changes in behaviour, such as out of character aggression, may be a key indicator that a young person has been abused. Equipping our young people with knowledge to prevent these relationships developing is very important. As important is the support available to victims of abuse too understand and identify the effect on them to ensure long-term damage is minimised.
Drama 4
With the dangers of the Internet and virtual social networking being a constant present in the media Rainham Mark tackle a very real threat to the safety of our children and young people. “My child has too much common sense to meet anyone off line” is no longer a safe assumption to protect children with the Internet too often hiding the true identity of on line contacts. Educating parents, as well and children and young people, about new technologies and the dangers they pose is the only way to ensure safety online.
